The other day, one of my single friends on Fbook stated something like “My girlfriend snatched 67k, what can your girlfriend do?” or some other douchebaggery. Holly said something like “How about make two kids?” Anyways, random intro to the subject of “Making.”
I saw Adam Savage (from Mythbusters fame) do a 10 Commandments of Making something video. Prior to that, I saw this cool picture of a kid who has had Adam do this picture for the last few years, of the previous year’s photo:
Here’s a secret I don’t think I’ve shared here: I am an engineer (or enginerd as my wife says). You may have surmised that, but that’s what I do for a living. As such, I’ve got a kindred bond with Mythbuster dudes. This video is really good for those in the club. Please watch as there’s a lot in the Cliff’s notes that don’t capture some of the message.
Here are the Cliff’s notes:
- Make something
- Make something useful
- Start right now
- Find a project
- Ask for help, advice, and feedback
- Recognize that discouragement and failure is part of the project
- Measure carefully
- Make things for other people
- Use more cooling fluid
Even if you aren’t an enginerd, I think creating (AKA Making) is something we all need to do to be great people. Make a story. Make a new way of doing something. Make jewelry. Make art. Make a meal for someone who can’t. Make people inspired. Make Something! If not, we’re just consumers and takers. Give back and make someone something.
