My wife and I were driving home from work, carpooling earlier this week, when we both tried to punch each other at the same time and cracked up. It’s probably not a game you’ve played since you were kids, but is something I recommend bringing back: Slug Bug (also known as Punch Buggy). If you happen to live in a cave or have never played it, it goes like this: every time you see VW Beetle or Bug (pre-71 VW) you punch someone in the car with you and say “Slug Bug <color>”.
Driving around is boring, as a dad or husband, it is your job to keep things fun and entertaining and this is an easy game to implement back into the mix, with or without kids. I’d recommend just start doing it, though the first time you do, expect a look like you just grew an extra eye in your forhead. “Slug Bug Yellow! Yes! One to Nothing!” is a great way to start a boring drive to the in-laws.
Slugs are not given with excessive force (unless you’re prepared for the resulting revenge slug to be given in the same manner). The only other rule is VW dealerships don’t apply, or if you allow it, only count as one slug bug.
My six and eight year old play, along with my wife and it’s a way to keep people engaged while passengers and provide a fun and easy way to spice up a drive. The kids are very proud when they catch one that I missed (I’m the champion) and always makes them smile. You will start to see slug bugs everywhere when you start playing this game. You’ll also see mostly middle-aged women and sometimes gay men are the primary drivers of these, with the occasional young woman in the mix.
