I seem to have one of these every year.
I really like Christmas. We didn’t have a lot of money, but I have a lot of fond Christmas memories growing up. Traditions such as decorating cookies with the Christmas records playing seem to really have burrowed deep into my brain, as I still like to listen to Christmas music even when no one is with me. I know, I’m sick in the head. Taking the kids to swimming right now we put on Christmas music and both kids really enjoy it. LoudBoy was basically telling Birdsnest to STFU when we were listening to Michael Buble’s It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas on the way home, pretty funny.
Anyway, some of my favorite Christmas songs:
Carol of the Bells. I’m fairly particular, it needs to be primarily choral in a more traditional style with limited instrumental and a heavy dose of male singers. Some versions are too much soprano and not enough baritone and bass. We did this in college choir and I really like how the voices are designed to replicate the sound of bells…diinnng, dooonnngg. This version is pretty good:
Santa Lost a Ho
Run Run Rudolph by Chuck Berry – doesn’t get played that much, but great song
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Mele Kalikimaka ( can’t help but thinking of the pool scene in Lampoon’s Christmas
I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
Baby It’s Cold Outside (can’t help but think some consensual date rape is about to happen)
Dominick the Donkey
Barnaked Ladies (and Sarah McLachlin) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, We Three Kings [I really, really like the traditional Christian songs]
with that I’ll leave you with one of my favorites:
