I get a lot of movies from the library (as usual, check your local or regional library system for these movies first – it’s your tax dollars at work here people), and like my dad, rent a fair amount as well (thanks RedBox!). Here are some you may have missed over the years (forgive me, as some of these are relatively bigger budget, some are even Oscar nominees/winners, and I think most are within about a 10-15 year period that I’m most familiar with. And some are so obvious they shouldn’t even be on this list, but I have to get the word out there for some people who are in the dark…) that are well worth the watch (or rewatch) – click on images for Amazon pass through. Some of these I’ve only seen a few times, others I’ve seen a bunch and are among my favorites. All should be seen at some point (even the honorable mentions), they’ll improve your life:
Once – This musical, released as a feature in 2007, still holds up in 2013. About a street musician in Dublin and a found friend with the real ability to make music. Great music throughout the movie, and story. Amazon has 4.5 stars in over 500 reviews. You’ve probably heard the single “Falling Slowly” already, but if not, google or youtube it; it’s nice
Momento and Usual Suspects – Both crime-type dramas. Most have probably seen Usual Suspects (great movie with Kevin Spacey) and not really a FallThroughTheCracks movie, but maybe some of the younger readers haven’t taken the time to make that shit happen. Do.It.Now. Momento is a Guy Pierce movie from (HFS) 2001(!! Can’t believe it’s been that long) that is on Netflix (deservedly so) and has nearly a 5 star Amazon rating with over 1,000 reviews, so perhaps you haven’t missed it.
Chasing Amy – A Kevin Smith film from 1997 (why are the movies on this list so old? I must be getting old too!) with young Ben Affleck. Far from a romantic comedy, but has lesbian tendencies, comic books, good conversation and a different spin on things.
Warrior – If you like athletic action movies with an backstory like Rocky, you’ll fucking LOVE Warrior. Two brothers both fighting for MMA glory, one with the pedigree, one a total long shot. Totally FUCKING AWESOME!! Plus Tom Hardy’s traps. I’m getting fucking amped just thinking of watching this one again (another nearly 5-star Amazon rating with over 500 reviews).
The Prestige – A magician movie (released the same year as The Illusionist, but I really liked The Prestige and don’t even remember The Illusionist). Anyway, directed by Chris Nolan (Inception and Dark Knight) Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, knots, time travel. Very cool.
Primal Fear – Perhaps Edward Norton’s best work, and this from a HUGE fan of him in Fight Club [must see without saying] and Rounders. Without giving anything away, young alterboy Norton is accused of murdering a priest. Must watch. Norton is great.
O Brother Where Art Thou? – Usually in my top 5 movies of all time (in case your wondering, others include The Princess Bride [don’t laugh, it’s also Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers favorite movie too], Fight Club, Dumb and Dumber, and Pulp Fiction). George Clooney is great here, maybe his best role eva!
Sling Blade – Think a dark Forest Gump with a retarded dude. Billy Bob Thornton before his crazy sexual escapades with Angelina Jolie and movie stardom. Dude is talented.
Dan in Real Life – For some reason I LOVE this Rom Com, despite the presence of Dane Cook who I absolutely fucking hate (and hate is really a strong word, but this dude fucking SUCKS. And steals jokes). I still like this movie, maybe because of the Pete Townshend cover [so good].
Forgetting Sarah Marshall – If you haven’t seen this 2008 movie, shame on you! (co-produced by Judd Apatow) Jason Segal, everyone’s favorite tall dweeb, has a tough time dealing with his breakup with Kristen Bell and heads to Hawaii where he meets Mila Kunis’s character (laminated top 5)… with muppets and Russel Brand.
PCU – This 1994 movie I’ve probably watched 15 times, but challenge you to find anyone you work with who’ve seen this. Jeremy Piven vehicle (with unknown John Favreau) that is sort of a 90’s version of political correct Animal House college campus (..mini-rant here, but who else who went to college from about 1992-2000 thought it sucked compared to today for men? We had baggy jeans and courdoroy and flannel shirts and now they have yogaNextToNothingPants and tight fitting tops and the girls look Sooo hot.. I know, I still end up at a local campus from time to time. We had short hair on top and long-hair on the bottom. Still pissed about that).
Honorable Mention: Slap Shot, Time Traveler’s Wife, A History of Violence, The Road, Primer (probably need to watch that one more than once; subtitles help as this can be confusing), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Life is Beautiful (absolutely must see, at least once.. a tough one to watch more than once though), Kids (another should see movie, but for another reason… disturbing), American History X, rom com Serendipity (love me some John Cusack) and while not a sleeper, Taken is one of the absolute best and one I’ve seen a dozen times or so.
Movies are a great escape.
