Here’s a little lighter topic heading into the weekend. I used to be “with it” and was sometimes even an early adopter of technology (had a cell phone early on, what a waste of money that was with $0.25/minute phone charges). I was up on hip new bands, up and coming trends and the lingo. Now I feel like I’m falling further and further behind. I see stuff in the news and on other forums and even talking with people from my gym and realize I’m becoming a fossil. My cryptonite is generally staying up on current events. I totally suck at that. I enjoy personal finance, social discussion on sex, gender, parenting, and marriage, and fitness/health. Besides that I’m often in the dark. Here are some things I have only the faintest idea what they are or why they’re important, nor do I care to Google them or research further. By the way, I’m being 100% serious here and not doing this to be funny, since I’ve been told I don’t have much of a sense of humor. Maybe some of you can shed some light.
Bitcoins – some sort of virtual currency? Fabricated out of what and based on what is a total mystery.
Pinetrest and Instagram– some sort of photo thing. My wife uses it but I don’t get it. Probably for all the narcisists out there, not sure though. There’s other photo things my wife tells me every other week it seems, I forget them instantly.
Coachella – I thought this was a purse maker, but based on Cakes and Shakes it must be some sort of concert thing. and this from a guy who went to Lollapallooza a lifetime ago (saw Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic, A Tribe Called Quest, Flaming Lips, Cypress Hill… so much awesome there)
TED talks – I thought it was about that teddy bear movie with Marky Mark, but don’t think that’s right. I hear it referenced all over. Am now thinking it’s like a podcast or something on socially relevant topics, but seriously, that’s a total guess. Could be a TV station for all I know.
Ricin – Did people know this was a poison before the mailings or was I the last to know? I still have never heard of it before and still don’t know really what it is.
Bands and Actors on SNL – We still occasionally turn on the show since the enjoyment I got from it in my adolescence still has me holding out hope that one of these weeks won’t suck. Looking at the hosts/musical guests this year I’m like “Who?” Frank Ocean, Passion Pit, Jeremy Renner, Ne-Yo, Kevin Hart, Miguel, Phoenix, etc. I just think Justin Timberlake should host and be the musical guest every week. ..and I liked that Thrift Store song by “I don’t even know who sings it” but it’s funny (probably since I dress like I wear your granddads clothes).
Drama shows on TV – here’s what’s on network TV every night for those of us that don’t have cable: two channels with some drama about solving a mystery or murder, one channel with a reality show contest with singing and/or dancing, and one channel with some sort of family-ish comedy that has about a 20% chance of being palatable. I understand that the sitcoms and singing/dancing shows appeal to the some segment of the masses, but how the hell do people get pulled into the drama shows (and then watch week after week) when to me they are indistinguishable from one another and SOOOoo many of them. We usually watch Netflix (saw a great documentary show about Bo Jackson the other night!), public television (yay!) or one of the palatable sitcoms; or better yet, read! When I have a head injury or am drinking, I like watching people get hit in the nuts on funniest videos, or Louie Anderson belly flop on that diving show, but I digress…
Dubstep – Until this last week, I thought it was the same as flash mob (a term I surprising figured out) as in they step and dance, but after hearing some dudes making fun of another guy on a radio show for his Dubstep, it must be some kind of music…like techno? No idea.
TL; DR – I see this at the ends of forum posts, still have no idea what it means.
Twitter – Can someone explain like I just landed on another planet what the point of regular people doing twitter. I sort of get following a celebrity to see what witty things they may have to say (Jim Gaffigan), but regular people? Is it a replacement for Facebook posts (which, by the way, I have started more active use over the last three months, just ahead of my mom apparently… yeah, I’m with the times)?
Reddit – My friend has said reddit is cool but I’ve never checked it out. Is it just like a big forum on random topics? Isn’t that difficult to find a tight enough niche to fit in?
I’m sure there are a million other things that are starting to pass me by, and I don’t really care. I’m not an old curmudgeon yet but can see myself headed that way. While I used to care about pop culture, sports and staying abreast of this stuff, I simply have shifted focus quite a bit. Green Day has a song called The Grouch about a guy who’s getting old and is now a grouch. The lyric “Oh my god I’m turning out like my dad” is sitting pretty close to home right about now. The older I get, the more my perspective and life focus is becoming more simple and basic, maybe life is eroding the extraneous(?).
So what don’t you “get”?
