Kari Loya authored My Top 40 at 40, a collection of 40 short stories about his life that are intended to entertain and provide minor bits of wisdom about enjoying life, living in the moment and not being afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
Somewhat entertaining, he had a lot of interesting life experiences, from doing Teach for America, to living and backpacking in South America to running with the bulls in Spain to various urban adventures near New York. A type-A personality, I recognized a kindred spirit. He too did an Ironman, marathons and strives to be the best he can be. I especially liked his Mission Statement at the end of the book. Things like:
- Radiate positive energy
- Be adventurous
- Be present
all are things I try to incorporate in my own life. Focusing on the positive and not the negative, focus on improvements and not mistakes in the past and being a man of honesty and integrity are all common traits we’re trying to accomplish.
While Mr. Loya has accomplished a lot of things in his life, he still thinks it’s just the beginning. While those of us nearing, or past, that milestone may not have done as many things, we’re ready to turn the page to something better…to take the lessons learned on the front half of our lives and apply them so that the back-half is even more life fulfilling. Full of energy, full of love, full of adventure. It’s up to us to make it happen.
