I’m traveling this week, recycling some content from my old blog in some instances, new content scheduled to post in other instances all prepared last week.
Topic today is Bacon and eating it in the context of a healthy diet. I’m very familiar with the topic so this is writing itself.
We eat Primal or Paleo – esque at my house. That means we have lots of meat (bought part of a grass fed cow recently), eggs, some veggies, a little fruit, and fats (coconut oil, avacado, nuts, meat fats) for about 80% of our meals. If we’re feeling lazy we might put in a thin crust pizza or breaded fish but this is the rare exception. Holly is in the middle of a Whole Life Challenge that makes a competition out of healthy eating, exercise, and mobility and is totally kicking butt. The irony is that bacon isn’t allowed(!!?)
We haven’t had in our house or eaten bread (at least my wife and I) in probably a year, and pretty much eliminated flour in a all recipes substituting almond flour instead for recipes like paleo-pancakes. Our energy levels are even and great, even if we skip meals, and our body compositions have generally improved during this time.
I was a vegetarian for a full 365 days as sort of an experiment a couple years back due to The China Study. This study has a lot of holes in it, and I had some issues with it when I read it, but went ahead anyway. We ate a lot of carbs, processed soy vegetarian food and I always felt we were missing something. When I broke my fast, so to speak, with a salmon patty I was in heaven. When I had bacon again, it was more fabulous than I remember. Now, a year later, we probably eat a couple pounds of bacon a week. We’re healthy and happy, and bacon makes everything better. For those worried about cholesterol, realize that dietary cholesterol has only the weakest correlation with blood cholesterol. Trying dropping the carbs instead, but be forwarned, most bacon does have sugar as an ingredient and is used as part of the curing process.
